Ron Watkins recounts an exhilarating dive expedition aboard the Rocio Del Mar in the Sea of Cortez, featuring vibrant encounters with sea lions, whale sharks, and Humboldt squid. From 18-25 October I led a terrific group on a Bluewater Photo Workshop in the Maldives. We had guests from Australia, Brazil, Estonia, France, Spain, Thailand, and the USA. We started in the Maldivian capital, Male, which has 154,000 people living on a 5.8 km island, making it one of the worldsmostmost densely populated cities. Airport transfer to our luxurious home for the week, the MV Carpe Vita,was quick and easy. She is easily the most spacious dive boat Ive been on, with excellent facilities and a helpful crew.

Anilao is a destination that I never tired of, even after visiting there ten different times. Nowhere in the Indo-Pacific have I seen an area so diverse, when it comes to critters, small fish, nudibranch, and strange creatures - mixed with some beautiful reefs. Add some incredible guides to that equation, and you have yourself a great photography trip! Anilao has to be up there as one of thebest macro photography destinations in the world.

I just returned from a productive Lembeh trip in the early part of June of this year. A lot of resorts have sprung up since Lembehs early days, and Iwas curious to see how the life was holding up.

My quest to dive with hammerheads started like many good things do with utter failure.

Bluewater Dive Travels annual Galapagos Islands trip was a remarkable 10-day adventure aboard the Galapagos Master. With ideal conditions following the end of El Nio, divers experienced vibrant marine life including schooling hammerhead sharks and mola mola. Highlights included close encounters with orcas, feeding marine iguanas, and rare sightings of red-lipped batfish. The trip featured engaging workshops and culminated in a photo contest, making it an unforgettable experience.

The largest living structure on Earth, the Great Barrier Reef is a spectacular, iconic destination for SCUBA divers. With over 600 species of coral, 1625 species of fish, 133 species of sharks and rays, and over 30 species of whales and dolphins, there is an abundance of marine life to discover along the 2300 kilometers of reef. For many travelers, though, the time required to make the journey across the Pacific, up to Northern Queensland, and out to the reef can put a damper on their time spent underwater. Luckily, several tour operators offer a one-stop-shop solution to this dilemma liveaboard dive trips.

Led by Scott Gietler and Vijay Raman, Bluewater conducted a very successful photo workskhop in La Paz in October 2014 with La Concha and The Cortez Club. Diving La Paz did not disappoint with numerous sightings of whale sharks, swims with playful dolphins and amazing encounters with sea lions. Big animal encounters coupled with large schools of fish, beautiful reefscapes and bright sunshine allowed trip participants lots of practice with wide angle photography and ambient light photography.

Bluewater Photo and Travel's 2014 Winter Anilao Workshop offered divers an exceptional macro photography experience. Despite a late-season typhoon, participants enjoyed diverse critters like nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and frogfish. Hosted at Crystal Blue Resort, the trip featured daily dives, photo seminars, and evening image reviews; and concluded with a slideshow of participants' favorite images.

Raja Ampat will blow your mind. I've heard that over and over again. I had high expectations for Raja and it certainly did not disappoint. 

Baja Ultimate Whale Safari 2024, led by Helen Brierley, thrilled participants with whale encounters starting in Cabo San Lucas. From humpbacks to whale sharks and grey whales, each day brought new marine marvels, including playful sea lions and rare sightings like sperm whales. The journey culminated in luxurious glamping and intimate moments with gentle grey whale mothers and calves, making it an unforgettable expedition.

We celebrated New Year's Eve in Raja Ampat aboard the Emperor Harmoni liveaboard! Our itinerary covered Misool, Central Raja, and Dampier, so we got to experience all the best dive sites and encountered mantas, wobbegong sharks, walking sharks, bobtail squid, and a stunning array of corals. We also hiked to the incredible jellyfish lake and Piaynemo viewpoint.

Fiji is a must-return dive destination for its scenic beauty, healthy reefs, diverse marine life, and vibrant underwater colors. It's accessible, safe, and has a friendly local culture. Our trip on the Naia liveaboard included incredible dive sites like Bligh Water, E-6, and Mount Mutiny, featuring stunning corals, fish, and underwater landscapes.

Every year, French Polynesia hosts humpback whales who travel from Antarctica to the islands warmer tropical waters, to mate, calve, and nurse their young. Interactions with these giants of the sea are life-changing, and for the lucky few who encounter humpbacks in the water, the experience is described as once-in-a-lifetime!

Lembeh is a place where you can truly appreciate the beauty of the small and often-overlooked creatures that inhabit the world's oceans. It is a must-visit destination for any diver with an interest in macro photography and a fascination with critters. The combination of knowledgeable dive guides, fantastic marine life, and excellent accommodations make this trip in which many guests return year after year. From Tahiti to Moorea, our journey was filled with diving, snorkeling, and whale watching. Highlights included encounters with humpback whales, turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant marine life. Rangiroa's Tiputa Pass offered thrilling dives with dolphins and manta rays.

In October 2023, Bluewater Travel organized a long-awaited Cuba Underwater Photo Workshop aboard the Avalon IV, following an adventurous Havana land tour. The journey offered insights into Cuba's rich history and vibrant culture before diving into the pristine reefs of Jardines de la Reina. Despite challenges like hurricane season and coral bleaching, the trip featured 21 dives teeming with marine life, from curious groupers to elusive hutias, culminating in rewarding photo workshops and a heartfelt camaraderie among divers and crew alike.

Starting from Arusha, they explored Tarangire National Park with its baobab trees and wildlife, encountered a black rhino in Ngorongoro Crater, and witnessed the majestic wildebeest migration in Serengeti, ending with a memorable leopard sighting.

All the humpback whales we encountered gracefully glided through the azure waters in a calm, relaxing manner. Their majestic presence, mere inches away from the boat, left us in awe as they playfully swam in circles and engaged in breathtaking surface interactions. The rhythmic dance of their tail slaps on the ocean's surface created an entrancing spectacle, making the entire experience nothing short of unforgettable. Our trip to Antarctica was truly spectacular, after a long journey we were rewarded with peaceful, lake-like waters that left us in awe. Our itinerary included topside and underwater adventures where we were able to observe an abundance of incredible wildlife, including various species of whales, seabirds, penguins, and seals. In particular, we were thrilled to spot the leopard seal, Antarctica's apex predator, making our journey even more remarkable. Not to mention partaking in the obligatory 'Polar Plunge' for those of us willing to brave the frigid waters in our bathing suits! Looking back, we can confidently say that our expedition was a resounding success, and the memories that we made will last for a lifetime.

Its a well-known secret amongst scuba divers that the best diving in the world is found in the Indonesian archipelago ofRaja Ampat. Unbeknownst to the general public, the region consists of thousands of limestone islands covered in emerald vegetation. Each round knob protrudes from aquamarine water, resembling ancient turtle spirits of an undiscovered age. Their random splatter creates narrow channels of water and swift currents the engine behind lush coral reefs harboring the worlds most prolific marine biodiversity. Raja Ampat is home to over 600 species of hard coral and 1700 species of reef fish. With so many species in one place, only those with the shortest attention spans will be able to see everything Raja Ampat has to offer on a given dive.

Mark B. Hatter led Bluewater Travel's February 2023 photo workshop in Socorro, Mexico, aboard the Rocio Del Mar. Highlights included encounters with whale sharks, humpback whales, and numerous species of sharks and mantas. The trip boasted excellent weather, clear seas, and successful photography opportunities, drawing repeat guests and showcasing vibrant marine life.

Galapagos has been number one on my bucket list since I learned about Darwin and his finches at school. Even before I became a diver I was fascinated by the topside nature of these mysterious volcanic islands, and my interest only intensified once I had a ticket to explore the underwater world. And so I leaped at the opportunity to check out one of Bluewater Travels Galapagos operators,Calipso, and to discover Galapagos from the comfort of the largest liveaboard in the area.

Im happy to stake my reputation to report that our December 2022 Raja Ampat photo workshop was a resounding success!

Bluewater's Underwater Photo Workshop in Anilao 2022 was hosted at Crystal Blue Resort. Led by expert photographer Mike Bartick, the workshop focused on macro photography with guided dives and daily photo reviews. Participants explored diverse marine life, capturing unique behaviors and utilizing creative techniques. Evenings featured sunset views, spa treatments, and social gatherings, culminating in a memorable showcase of photographic achievements.

In fall 2022, eighteen divers joined the Rocio Del Mar for Bluewater's Explore Baja trip in the Sea of Cortez. Starting from Puerto Peasco, the journey featured diverse marine life encounters, including sea lions, whale sharks, and vibrant reefs. Highlights included unique underwater photography opportunities and memorable interactions with sea creatures like mobula rays and humpback whales.

La Paz, Mexico is eden for the humble sea lion. Sardines flitter through golden, ethereal rays of light and azure water - like a shower of silver coins. The occasional cormorant pierces the surface tension of the sea, on the hunt for a passing snack. And large supercilious sea turtles swim lazily past curious divers. The southernSea of Cortezlaps up onto desert shores dotted with large Cardon cactus - the perfect backdrop for an underwater photography workshop.

In October 2022, 10 adventurers embarked on a 10-day safari across Tanzania with Bluewater Travel. Starting in Arusha at Villa Maua, they visited Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater, encountering elephants, lions, and diverse wildlife. At Lake Masek in Serengeti, they witnessed cheetahs and the Great Migration, including dramatic river crossings with Nile crocodile encounters.

In October, sixteen adventurers joined Bluewater Travel for a ten-day trip to Fiji led by Craig Dietrich. Starting at the Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbour, they enjoyed thrilling shark dives before heading to Volivoli Beach Resort. Despite initial weather challenges, they explored vibrant reefs at Vatu-i-Ra Passage, ending with a memorable Fijian luau.

Observing and photographing humpback whales underwater is one of our favorite ocean activities, and is something that never gets old. Every year since 2014, Covid notwithstanding, Bluewater Travel has offered one-week trips to Moorea, French Polynesia, that are dedicated to in-water encounters with these huge, intelligent animals. Our 2022 season was one of the best yet, with five trips offering more Bluewater guests than ever before, intimate encounters with humpback whales.

Highlights included diverse marine life sightings from tiny fish to whale sharks, with optimal diving conditions and professional photo workshops enhancing the experience.

In May-June 2022, a Bluewater Travel group explored Honduras' Bay Islands aboard the Roatan Aggressor. They dove diverse sites like Roatan's Valley of the Kings and Tavianna's Wall, encountering hawksbill turtles and diverse marine life. Cayos Cochinos showcased pristine reefs, while Utila offered unique sightings like electric stargazers. The trip culminated with thrilling dives at Roatan's Cara a Cara and Mary's Place, celebrating with an awards ceremony and sloth sanctuary visit.

In 2022, a Galapagos trip led by Mark Strickland explored the archipelago's rich biodiversity. Highlights included encounters with endemic species like giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and unique shark sightings at Darwin and Wolf Islands. Memorable dives at Cabo Douglas and Cousins Rock were complemented by a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz Island.

Bluewater Travel's Dominican Republic Trip Recap May 2022 showcased the vibrant reefs near Bayahibe, staying at Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus with Dressel Divers. The group enjoyed clear waters, diverse marine life sightings including nurse sharks and eagle rays, and excellent weather throughout the week.

The return to Anilao in April/May 2022 marked a significant moment after over two years of uncertainty due to the pandemic. With borders reopening in the Philippines, the annual Bluewater macro photo workshops resumed at Crystal Blue Resort. The workshops, led by experienced instructors like Mike Bartick and Erik Lukas, quickly resumed their intensive pace with daily dives and photography sessions. Participants eagerly applied new techniques, revisiting familiar dive sites to capture diverse marine life, culminating in a spirited photo competition and celebratory dinner, highlighting a joyous return to this beloved underwater paradise.

In December 2023, a Bluewater Photo Group explored Tanzania's Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti. Highlights included diverse wildlife sightings like elephants, lions, flamingos, and a rare black rhino. The Serengeti offered memorable encounters with elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, making it a trip of remarkable wildlife multiples.

Our 26-day journey through Egypt and Jordan transported us to ancient lands rich in history and wonders, both on land and underwater. Highlights included the pyramids of Giza, the city of Petra, diving in the Red Sea, and exploring wrecks like the SS Thistlegorm. From Cairo to Aqaba, we immersed ourselves in diverse cultures, history, and natural beauty.

Nirupam Nigam led a Bluewater workshop to the remote Revillagigedo Archipelago, Socorro Islands. Aboard the Rocio Del Mar, they navigated 250 nautical miles of the Pacific. Dives at sites like San Benedicto and Roca Partida featured encounters with mantas, sharks, dolphins, and even a whale shark, making it an unforgettable experience for all.

For underwater photographers, La Paz is a wide-angle paradise with curious sea lions, speedy mobula rays, and elegant whale sharks. But be sure to bring a macro lens if you go! If youre lucky you can see nudibranchs, lots of blennies, and some jawfish.

Clear night skies provided stunning views of the Milky Way over Mount Rotui on the western shores of Cook's Bay, which made for great photo opportunities once the sun had set. Until this season, I had not thought to make the time to photograph the night sky on my trips, but if astrophotography is something you are interested in, many places of the world that we visit for diving also offer excellent nighttime photo opportunities.

On par with the Galapagos and Socorro Islands, Cocos Island National Park is aUNESCO World Heritage Centreand a mecca for all things sharky. Diving here typically wouldnt be described as pretty, as there is virtually no colorful coral, and therefore none of the associated vibrant reef species. But dont be fooled - the waters around Cocos are some of the richest in the world, with Pacific Ocean currents converging to bring all manner of shark species, and a myriad of other pelagics to the island.

The Philippines, part of the Indo-Pacific Coral Triangle, is renowned for its underwater biodiversity, ideal for both macro and wide-angle photography. The Best of the Visayas 2020 workshop highlighted diverse dive sites like Cebu Strait and Apo Island, featuring everything from pygmy seahorses to whale sharks, offering exceptional photo opportunities.

In early August, a group of adventurers (led by myself) descended on the Hilton Hurghada (on the coast of Egypt) before being transferred to Marsa Alam and boarding the M/V Blue Horizon in anticipation of a week of world-classdiving in the Red Sea. We opted for Hurghada due to flight travel from the United States is much easier to Hurghada than Marsa Alam (most U.S. flights only fly to Marsa Alam a couple of times each week). Our approximately four-hour transfer was on a large comfortable bus, including snack boxes and water.

The Sea of Cortezwas where I first became hooked on underwater photography, at a Bluewater workshop 4 years ago. Since then I have learned quite a bit, and when Bluewater Travel asked me if I wanted to lead a trip there this year, it was a very easy decision: yes, of course!

In 2017, Erik Lukas led Bluewater Travel's photography workshop at Alor Dive Resort, Indonesia. The remote resort featured eco-friendly bungalows nestled among lush greenery and offered daily dives at stunning sites like Sulambali Wall and Red Sand, showcasing vibrant coral walls and rich macro opportunities. The workshop focused on honing underwater photography skills, emphasizing both wide-angle and macro techniques. Highlights included encounters with diverse marine life like Rhinopias and anemones at Anemone City. Cultural immersion included interactions with local villagers selling handwoven fabrics. The trip concluded with a photo contest celebrating guests' evolving skills and memorable experiences.

Helen Brierley describes an unforgettable journey aboard the Rocio del Mar from San Jose del Cabo to San Benedicto Island. The liveaboard's stabilizers ensured a smooth crossing, essential for seasick-prone travelers. The April 2019 Turks & Caicos Photo Workshop, led by Craig Dietrich, featured 18 participants diving from the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II. Highlights included diving among coral reefs, sheer walls, Caribbean reef sharks, and green turtles, with excellent visibility and minimal currents. The workshop offered personalized photo instruction, culminating in a successful awards night.

Scott Gietler's first Socorro dive trip exceeded expectations with abundant shark and manta ray encounters. The journey from Cabo was straightforward, and highlights included close-up shark sightings, impressive manta ray interactions, and a memorable dolphin hunt. Socorro proved a must-visit destination for underwater photographers.

It had been a few years since Bluewater Photo ran a workshop in Lembeh, the ever popular macro destination located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Trip co-leaders, Matt Sullivan and Erik Lukas had been brainstorming workshop ideas with a focus on macro photography, and after some internal discussion with the Bluewater Travel team, it was decided that a return to Lembeh would happen....

Our Explore Baja, Sea of Cortez trip was to take us from San Jose del Cabo in the south all the way to Puerto Peasco in the north a distance of around 600 nautical miles over 12 days. The biodiversity of the Sea of Cortez is world renowned and we were all excited to get underway and begin our journey of underwater exploration.

In July-August 2018, Craig Dietrich led photo workshops in the Sea of Cortez. Highlights included diving with sea lions, snorkeling with whale sharks, and nightly photo seminars. The Rocio del Mar liveaboard provided excellent service and accommodations, enhancing the overall experience for divers and photographers.

In April 2018, Erik Lukas led two 10-day macro photography workshops at Crystal Blue Resort, Anilao. Participants enjoyed 36 dives, image reviews, and workshops. Highlights included frogfish, nudibranchs, and blackwater dives. The trip concluded with a photo competition, showcasing significant improvements in attendees' skills.

French Polynesia, or Tahiti, offers stunning beaches and thrilling shark diving. Known as the "shark capital of the world," it boasts diverse marine life. Top dive sites include Tiputa Pass, Avatoru Pass, and Tumakohua Pass. The best time to visit is April-October, but diving is good year-round.

The Truk Lagoon photo workshop, held from February 25 to March 4, 2018, offered divers the opportunity to explore WWII wrecks in depths ranging from the surface to beyond 200 feet. Highlights included diving on the Kiyosumi Maru, Yamagiri Maru, I-169 Sub, and Shinkoku Maru, with rich history, artifacts, and excellent underwater photography opportunities. The trip was well-organized by the Odyssey staff and featured spacious accommodations, calm conditions, and personal photo seminars.

Tim Yeo recounts the exhilarating Socorro Island diving experience aboard the Quino El Guardian liveaboard. We embarked on an unforgettable journey aboard the Waow in Indonesia, recounting our smooth travel experience from LAX to Denpasar, Bali. Our flights with China Eastern were comfortable, despite a minor glitch during online check-in. Upon arrival, we were awestruck by the Waow, a handcrafted ship steeped in Indonesia's pirate history. The liveaboard exceeded our expectations with spacious accommodations and exceptional diving opportunities, showcasing diverse marine life across Alor and Lembata. We relished encounters with rare species and enjoyed luxurious amenities, making it a trip of a lifetime for diving enthusiasts.

Moorea's stunning landscapes and turquoise lagoon set the stage for unforgettable whale encounters. Over two expeditions, we swam with humpback whales, witnessing behaviors like breaching, spy-hopping, and an exhilarating heat run.

Trip Leader Erik Lukas led a 10-day workshop with 36 dives, photo reviews, and workshops in Anilao. Highlights included Blue Ring Octopus, Rhinopias, and numerous nudibranchs. The workshop ended with a photo contest shootout where guests showcased all they had learned the past few days.

The Anilao Workshop, led by Brent Durand and Tommy Stylski with macro photographer Mike Bartick, provided 22 divers with intensive macro photography experiences. Participants captured rare marine life, such as the blue ring octopus and pygmy seahorses, over ten days. The workshop included daily critiques, photo talks, and one-on-one instruction, culminating in a photo contest showcasing stunning underwater images.

Mark Strickland led a diverse group of 20 global divers to Socorro Islands, renowned for encounters with large marine species. Highlights included mantas, tiger sharks, and dolphins at sites like El Boiler and Roca Partida. Despite strong currents, the trip provided ample photo opportunities and unforgettable marine life interactions.

We hopped on the shuttle in San Jose and headed out towards the port town of Puntarenas. Traffic was bad due to the long weekend, but we arrived at the boat in great spirits. Our driver was a ornithologist and gave us lectures along the drive about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. We boarded the Okeanos Aggressor I and motored out of port right away.

Bluewater Photorecently held two back-to-back Indonesia photo workshops for 18 underwater photo and video shooters. We dived world-class macro sites, one of the most iconic shipwrecks in the world, spent hours with manta rays, drifted quietly over beautiful reefs and got to take in some local culture as icing on the cake.

Mark Strickland's article recounts his Solomon Islands photo workshop experience with Bluewater Travel, emphasizing the region's rich marine life, pristine reefs, WWII wrecks, and local culture. The journey aboard the "Bilikiki" included dives at iconic sites like Leru Cut and Mary Island, showcasing vibrant fish populations and unique geological features. The workshops focused on photography, with daily reviews and a final slideshow. Interaction with locals was a highlight, demonstrating sustainable tourism practices. Bluewater Travel's 2024 Svalbard group trip offered a thrilling Arctic adventure filled with diverse wildlife encounters, icy dives, and spectacular landscapes.

Led by Nirupam Nigam, the trip focused on underwater photography. Participants encountered diverse marine life including manta rays, sharks (silvertip, hammerheads), and humpback whales. The Rocio Del Mar liveaboard provided a comfortable base for learning and exploring, with participants using a variety of camera systems. Conditions varied from calm to challenging, but each dive offered unique photographic opportunities, culminating in close encounters with humpback whales at Roca Partida.

In fall 2024, eighteen divers joined the Rocio Del Mar for Bluewater's Explore Baja trip in the Sea of Cortez. Starting from Puerto Pe├▒asco, the journey featured diverse marine life encounters, including sea lions, whale sharks, and vibrant reefs. Highlights included unique underwater photography opportunities and memorable interactions with sea creatures like mobula rays and humpback whales.

Our Fiji Photo & GoPro Workshop, held October 9-19, 2024, delivered breathtaking underwater experiences and vibrant cultural immersion. Guided by Nirupam Nigam and Todd Kortte, 25 divers explored the kaleidoscopic reefs of Beqa Lagoon and the legendary Bligh Waters. Highlights included dramatic shark dives, thriving soft corals, and vibrant marine life enhanced by nutrient-rich currents. Evenings featured workshops on photography and GoPro techniques, fostering remarkable progress among participants. Land excursions, cultural activities, and a final beachside lovo dinner added to the camaraderie.

The is part 2 of a 2-partGalapagosreport. I wrote thefirst Galapagos trip report here, since then I've been back a second time. The Galapagos did not disappoint, in fact it was the best diving we had ever done in our life. Schooling hammerheads on most dives, mola mola, marina iguana, penguins, orcas, yellowfin tuna, mantas and whale sharks made every other dive spot in the world pale in comparison.

I imagine that when people think of the Maldives, a view of tranquil turquoise seas and complete bliss comes to mind. They are not wrong. The crystal clear waters and white sands of the Indian Ocean are unmatched in beauty. However, underwater the Maldives is not what I would necessarily describe as tranquil. Perhaps thrilling would be a more appropriate word?

All I can say is, pack your reef hook!

Bluewater Travel's Eco Socorro Trip in May 2021, led by Tim Yeo, involved an 8-day diving adventure in the Revillagigedo Archipelago. Despite initial weather challenges, our dive trip to Cozumel provided a refreshing escape from pandemic constraints. Staying at Iberostar Cozumel, we enjoyed excellent diving conditions with Dressel Divers, exploring sites like Palancar and Punta Sur. Highlights included encounters with eagle rays, turtles, and vibrant reef life, making it a memorable week.

With the lush green Tahitian island of Moorea rising out of the Pacific Ocean behind me, I quickly grabbed my fins and secured them to my feet. One last check of the camera and I was slipping into the water from the side of a rigid inflatable center console boat. Our guide was already in the water, his fist held high in the air to signal that the gigantic animal we had come to see was stationary and resting. The early morning chill of saltwater rushed up my spine as I quietly finned out into the blue. Peering into the cerulean depths, a large ominous shadow appeared below, a small stream of bubbles trickling toward surface from the dark spot that we were now all hovering above. Moments later the giant would surface, the reverberations of a mighty exhale vibrating down through my snorkel would leave me scrambling to get those first shots, utterly in awe of witnessing one of the worlds largest and most graceful animals, the Humpback Whale.
